Women’s Captains’ Welcome 2024/25
Hi everyone!
We, Alexia, Anna and Izzy, are excited to introduce ourselves to you as this year’s captains of the CUAFC women’s side, and briefly tell you about the upcoming season and the aspirations we have. With the immense growth women’s football has undergone in the past years, we are honoured to take up this position in our teams and lead such a stellar group of talented players. The women’s side has seen an unprecedented amount of preseason and trials applications; we can already sense great excitement for this season, and the many opportunities that lie ahead of us.
The women’s Blues past season was one of many successes. With a strong league run, the team continually showed tenacity and fostered a great spirit, which resulted in stellar performances in our Midlands Tier 1 league and National Trophy, as well as the annual Varsity match, with a 3-0 win over our oldest rivals. The Blues have experienced a large turnover this year, with many of our most experienced teammates leaving us on a high note. This however brings an exciting time ahead, with new faces being introduced to the club in what has been a vibrant and competitive preseason so far. Both on and off the pitch, we have seen great club spirit, talent and momentum that we aim to carry on throughout the season. We have our sights set on high achievements: vying for the league, a strong cup run and of course, a Varsity win. The Blues’ season kicks off on the 23rd of October against a newly promoted Oxford, a great fixture to test out a new Blues squad. Do come down and support!
Coming off the back of a roaring Varsity win, the 24/25 season promises to be an extremely exciting one for the Eagles, as we move into the university league for the first time! The strength of women’s football in Cambridge is growing and likewise is the strength of our team. After a brilliant preseason, we welcome both new and returning players as we strive for success in both the Midlands Tier 4 league and the Midlands Conference Cup. Of course, we look to win varsity (again) as another goal for this season and can’t wait to see what our new team and what entering BUCs will mean for us! The Eagles’ season kicks off on the 23rd as well, with a home fixture against ARU.
This past year was historic for our third team, the Merlins. For the first time, a Varsity match against Oxford’s development team was held – in which the Merlins emphatically triumphed with a score of 7-0 (!). This upcoming season, the Merlins are looking forward to growing as a team in numbers and skill. Fuelled by the historic 7-0 win in varsity, we are aiming to play more friendly fixtures than previous years - all in preparation for our most important match of the season: Varsity 2025. On and off the pitch, the Merlins are becoming more important and stronger still as the newest team of CUAFC!
As we look towards the new season, we can’t wait for the opportunities this club will have to grow even more. It’s an absolute honour to lead a group of such wonderful people. We look forward to seeing many of you at our annual alumni day this year!
Kindest regards,
Alexia (Blues Captain)
Anna (Eagles Co-Captain)
Izzy (Eagles Co-Captain)
